Regional Biosphere Gathering, Alma, NB

In May, we had the opportunity to meet in Alma, New Brunswick, with staff from two other Maritime Biosphere organizations.

We arrived at Alma, in the Fundy Biosphere Region, on Wednesday May 21 . We became acquainted with the representatives from the Bras D'or Lake Biosphere in Cape Breton as well as the Fundy Biosphere.

We shared knowledge on our current and past projects with staff from these two biospheres.

Some of the main topics we discussed included conservation, sustainable communities, sustainable tourism, reconciliation, and incorporating local indigenous knowledge into our work.

Outside of discussion periods, we enjoyed the beauty of the Fundy National Park and Biosphere. We took part in a guided walk of Dickson Falls led by a Parks Canada representative. He provided  great historical and environmental information about Fundy National Park.

At Dickson Falls, we observed a threatened lichen called Eastern Waterfan or Peltigera hydrothyria. We also received a guided basket weaving activity by Ashley Sanipass with the Mi'kmaq Art Experience.

By the end of the gathering on May 23rd, we took home valuable information and ideas from the other biospheres to incorporate into our work at the Southwest Nova Biosphere.
